The Artwork

Some days I cant get my head around why people are the way they are and do the things they do.  Yes I know out of control emotions are most likely the answer, but how can you get to a point where you are just reacting so aggressively to something so trivial?  Stand back and take a look at yourself and what you are doing.  See the damage you are causing to both yourself and others.

This piece of digital art was created to illustrate the impact of a constant burning anger, of aggression and the damage that it causes to the person that holds it inside and dwells on negative all day long.

The artwork was initially inspired by the frustration noted above but then given energy and life and started taking for when I stumbled across the Island of Dolls.  The tenuous connection with grief and fear that prompted using the dolls as a way of appeasing spirits ties in to the use of anger and aggression to get your point across as your general response to even the smallest most trivial thing.

The Inspiration

Looking for something spine chilling?

Check out Mexicos Island of the Dolls – or “Isla de las Muñecas” in Spanish – located within Xochimilcos canals near Mexico City.

This unusual tourist spot has gained notoriety as one of Earths eeriest places. The Island of the Dolls’ haunting story revolves around Don Julian Santana Barrera, who lived there during mid 20th century times. According to local tales Don Julian stumbled upon a dead girl floating in a canal and was haunted relentlessly by her ghostly presence afterward.

Seeking to quell her spirits unrest he festooned dolls across every corner of his island home – gathering them from garbage heaps and bartering with locals for produce along the way. His belief grounded itself on dolls holding dead spirits within them that would protect him from malicious forces beyond his control; however these effigies were often damaged in some way be it missing limbs or suffering from decay. Don Julian spent his life collecting countless dolls until his island was transformed into a spooky spectacle full of them in various stages of disrepair.

Many who have visited this offbeat destination describe feeling an eerie presence emanating from these curious objects – some even swear they’ve seen them move on their own accord with their own eyes! Though Don passed away twenty years ago now, visitors from far and wide still flock to this “Island of the Dolls” – drawn by both its macabre reputation and haunting atmosphere created by hanging toys that continue to sway gently in the breeze.

How it was created

The “stock images” used, see below, to create this artwork were generated in Midjourney a text to image generator.  These were then blended together in Photoshop and combined with other textures and overlays to create the finished image.
